What is the APAAR ID, and why was it introduced?

In 2023, the Government of India introduced the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR ID), aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The initiative aims to simplify the academic journey for students by providing a digital identifier that links their educational records across multiple institutions, both within India and internationally.

What type of academic information can be stored in the APAAR ID?

The APAAR ID is a unique 12-digit code allowing students to digitally store, manage, and access a comprehensive range of academic information. This includes scorecards, marksheets, grade sheets, degrees, diplomas, certificates, and co-curricular achievements.

Can you access academic records anytime, or is there a specific process to follow?

APAAR integrates with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), enabling students to accumulate, transfer, and redeem credits across institutions. This system not only facilitates credit transfers but also tracks academic achievements, making it easier for students to manage their educational progress

With the APAAR ID, students can access their academic records anytime, as it consolidates all their achievements onto a single platform, creating a comprehensive digital profile.

What are the requirements for applying for an APAAR ID?

Before generating an APAAR ID, there are a few important prerequisites to consider.

First, the student’s name in the UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) records must match exactly with the name as per their Aadhaar. This ensures consistency and accuracy in the identification process.

Additionally, the student’s Personal Education Number (PEN) is mandatory for generating the APAAR ID. It is a unique identification number for students across all the education platforms.

Is APAAR ID only useful for current students, or can it benefit graduates as well?

The APAAR ID is beneficial not only for current students but also for graduates. For students like Krystelle Dsouza, a journalist pursuing her master’s in journalism at Mumbai University, this ID serves as a long-term academic identity.

She shares, “I had to create my APAAR ID recently, and it is linked to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). I think this is a great step for students to have access to all of their degree certificates and anything they’ve accumulated throughout their academic trajectory in one place.” This highlights how the APAAR ID helps graduates manage and access their academic records, ensuring that their educational achievements are easily accessible, even after completing their studies.

Do I need to register for APAAR ID, and how do I get started with it?

Yes, you have to register for the APAAR ID. To register, visit the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC Bank) website – abc.gov.in and click on ‘My Account,’ then select the ‘Student’ option. Next, click ‘Sign up’ and provide your mobile number, address, and Aadhaar card details to create a DigiLocker account

After logging in with your credentials, DigiLocker will prompt you to consent to share your Aadhaar card details with ABC for KYC verification. Once you agree, enter your academic details, such as your school or university name, class, and course. After submitting the form, your APAAR ID card will be generated.

How can you download your APAAR ID?

The APAAR ID can be easily downloaded by logging into the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC Bank) website. Once logged in, students can navigate to the dashboard and select the ‘APAAR card download’ option. The card will then appear on the screen, ready to be downloaded or printed.
