Panaji: A fire broke out at a sawmill at Davorlim, Salcete, in early hours of Friday.According to a fire officer at Margao fire station, the control room received a call at 2.46am. “When we reached the venue, the firefighters could already see the flames erupting from the sawmill,” the officer said.The officer said that the fire was so intense that the water needed to douse it proved insufficient. “A total of five fire tenders fought the fire. We called reinforcements from fire stations at Cuncolim, Curchorem, Verna, Ponda and Panaji headquarters,” the officer said.The exact cause of the fire is not known, but officials suspect an electric short circuit at the facility was likely the source of the fire. “When we accessed the CCTV footage, we saw a spark, and then flames spreading around the room.”The fire destroyed the wooden items for sale, including the rafters and beams, as well as six wood-processing machines in the facility. The loss, however, is not estimated yet.
