Every office seems to have one person who refills the printer paper without being asked. Every church has volunteers stacking chairs long after the service ends. Hardly anyone thanks them.Colossians 3:23 gives that hidden work a different weight:“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”The verse changes who the work is really for.
Who Paul Was Speaking To
These words were first addressed to servants in Christian households. They had little status and almost no say over their daily tasks, and their effort was rarely praised.Paul tells them their work is seen by the Lord. For people the wider society often ignored, that carried real dignity.Doing It “Heartily”The Greek phrase behind “heartily” literally means “from the soul”. It describes effort that comes from within.Verse 22 warns against “eye service”, the kind of effort that switches on only when the boss walks past. Heartfelt work keeps going when the room is empty.
When Thanks Never Comes
A carer changes bedsheets at three in the morning. A teaching assistant gives up a lunch break to help one struggling pupil with reading. Neither will appear in a newsletter. Those moments still count. Nothing offered to the Lord is wasted, even if the team meeting moves on without a mention.Write down one task done well this week that nobody noticed. Offer it to God in a short prayer.
Appreciation Still Matters
None of this means people should accept being taken for granted. A few verses later, Colossians 4:1 tells masters to give their servants what is just and fair.So asking for proper pay or honest feedback is reasonable. But a heart that works for God is less likely to be crushed when praise does not arrive. And it becomes freer to thank others.
The Deeper Meaning of Colossians 3:23
The next verse speaks of receiving “the reward of the inheritance” from the Lord. Paul pointed his readers beyond the present moment towards something lasting.Verse 24 closes with a short line: “ye serve the Lord Christ.” That phrase turns ordinary tasks into acts of service. The work itself may look small. The One it is offered to gives it meaning.
