Quote of the Day from the Bible, 17 October 2026: When Your Carefully Made Plans Fall Apart, Remember the Wisdom of Proverbs 16:9
Months of work can go into planning, but unexpected cancellations often require starting over. Proverbs 16:9 illustrates that while humans plan, divine guidance ultimately directs outcomes. It is important to continue making plans and adapting to changes. Delayed plans may sometimes lead to unforeseen opportunities and can yield positive results. Committing works to God through prayer encourages flexibility and helps navigate life’s uncertainties.

Months of work can go into a single plan. Then the venue rings to say the booking has been cancelled, and everything has to start again. Or a buyer pulls out of a house sale two days before completion.Proverbs 16:9 was written for exactly this kind of week. In the King James Version it reads:“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”Read it slowly. People draw up the plans, and God has the final say over where each step lands.

Making Plans Is Not the Problem

Nothing in this proverb tells anyone to stop planning. The same book points to the ant, which gathers its food in summer, as an example worth copying. So the budget still needs doing. The holiday still needs booking early if prices keep rising.

Big Route, Small Steps

There is a difference between a “way” and a “step”. The way is the overall direction someone has in mind. Steps are what actually happens day by day.Someone might train as a nurse expecting to work at the local hospital, then find their place years later in a hospice two counties away. The calling held. The address changed.

The Day It All Goes Wrong

Cancelled plans can be awkward and disappointing. Everyone was told. Money has gone.Give it a day or two before deciding anything. After that, look at what is left. Often part of the original idea can still go ahead in a smaller or later form. Some delays even turn out well. A missed train can mean being at home when an elderly neighbour needs help, and that kind of thing usually makes sense only afterwards.

Plan With Room to Spare

Proverbs 16:3 tells readers to commit their works to the LORD. Praying over a plan while it is still being made changes how it takes shape.Leave a little slack in the calendar. Expect at least one thing to change.

The Deeper Meaning of Proverbs 16:9

The Hebrew word behind “directeth” can mean to make firm. God is pictured steadying each footstep on uneven ground.A few chapters later, Proverbs 19:21 says much the same. The human heart is full of plans, but the LORD’s purpose endures.Human choices still count for something. They sit inside a larger plan, and a broken one can still end up as part of the road.
