Four injured as tree touches 132-kv line, sparks blast in Sultanpur home

Lucknow: In a freak accident, four people, including a three-year-old girl, were injured after a tree branch near their house came into contact with a 132-kV transmission line, triggering a high-voltage surge that caused a blast in electrical appliances and other household items in Sultanpur’s Awas Vikas area. The incident occurred near a water tank in the locality on Friday.Executive engineer Ashwani Kumar Verma of the Sultanpur Electricity Distribution Division said the mishap occurred when a man was attempting to cut branches of a moringa tree situated close to the house.“During the process, a branch touched the 132-kV Sultanpur-Bikapur transmission line. The line runs from the Payagipur powerhouse to the Bikapur transmission powerhouse. The contact caused high voltage to pass through the tree and into the adjoining house, resulting in injuries to four people present there,” Verma said.According to the discom, the voltage surge also damaged electrical equipment installed at the premises. Officials and field staff reached the spot and inspected the site after receiving information about the incident.Three of the injured were identified as Preeti Agrahari, her three-year-old daughter, and Kanchan Agrahari. Kanchan reportedly suffered a serious head injury. The injured were initially taken to the district hospital and later shifted to a private hospital for treatment. However, the department’s press note stated that four people were injured in the incident.Verma also dismissed rumours that the incident was caused by a fault in the smart meter installed at the residence.
