Ahmedabad: 10 AMC projects worth s 396 crore miss deadlines

Ahmedabad: The AMC has been implementing major projects relating to stormwater, drainage, and water networks, but 10 vital projects worth Rs 396 crore have missed deadlines, a lapse that has piled more inconvenience on citizens.Excavations for these projects were undertaken, and since the works are running well past deadlines, citizens’ woes have been aggravated. Over the past two years, the AMC has focused on infrastructure works and at present over 100 major projects costing more than Rs 3,000 crore are ongoing in the city. So, dug-up roads are a chronic problem across Ahmedabad. Currently, 48 stormwater network projects are underway, costing approximately Rs 1,080 crore. Additionally, over 30 projects for replacing and rehabilitating old drainage lines are ongoing, with expenses exceeding Rs 1,500 crore, while water network projects costing more than Rs 600 crore are also in progress. An official from the AMC, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “A project delay in the eastern area of the city is unique. The project involves the connection of a 2,100mm diameter main trunk line near the Express Highway to the Rasuka Water Treatment Plant.” The official said, “The project, costing Rs 145.4 crore, was to be completed by Feb 14, 2024, in 21 months from the start date. However, as of now, 83.5% of the work is complete.” A water line needs to be laid under the railway line from Ramol’s Lalbegi Circle towards Aslali, the official said. “For this, Rs 30.9 crore was deposited with the railways, and the line was to be laid within six months,” the official said. “The railways began work in Nov 2024, but to avoid disturbing railway movement, the work was undertaken in a slow and measured manner. It was halted altogether during the monsoon from June to Oct 2025.Work resumed in Dec 2025 and is now estimated to be completed in six months, the official said. “Another reason for the delay of this project is that the main contractor was given an extension for laying networks in other areas,” the official said. “Thus, the work intended to be completed by Feb 2024 is still unfinished as of now. The project deadline is now June 30, 2026, as approved by the standing committee of the AMC.”
