Ipta’s tribute to creative journey of Abid Surti
“Ek Shaam Abid Surti Ke Naam”

Lucknow: Literature, art and social concerns took centre stage at a programme titled ‘Ek Shaam Abid Surti Ke Naam’, organised by the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) at Balraj Sahni Auditorium. During the programme, Surti spoke at length about his writing, creative experiences and literary journey. He recalled the inspirations that shaped his work and discussed the social concerns that have influenced his creative vision over the years.The programme brought together literary and cultural enthusiasts for an engaging interaction with noted writer, satirist, painter and social activist Abid Surti. Among his well-known creations are ‘Bahadur’, ‘Teesri Aankh’, ‘The Black Book’ and ‘Kathavachak’.IPTA national executive president Rakesh Veda opened the programme with an introduction to Surti’s life and creative contribution. Highlighting his multifaceted journey, Veda said Surti carved a distinctive identity across several mediums of literature and art. His creativity, he noted, had never been restricted to entertainment but had consistently engaged with questions concerning society and the lives of ordinary people.Social activist Rakesh Veda also spoke about Surti’s engagement with marginalised communities and social realities. He referred to work such as ‘Cages: Love and Vengeance in a Red Light District’, noting how the work explores the lives of people on the margins with empathy and sensitivity.The interaction also turned to the role of literature and art in society. Surti shared his perspective on the responsibility of writers and artists to remain engaged with the realities around them.
