Families clash over Manas’s behaviour, marriage dispute

Lucknow: A day after the shooting that killed Divya Mishra and her sister-in-law Sheeba, the two families offered contrasting versions of the events and the state of Divya’s marriage to Manas Bajpayee, who police say later died by suicide.Divya’s cousins, including Mayank Dixit, said the marriage was arranged in 2017. They alleged that around two years later, Divya and her family began noticing what they described as Manas’s “psychotic behaviour”, and that the situation deteriorated to the point where Divya sought separation.Manas’s relatives rejected those claims. His maternal uncle, Awadhesh Shukla, called the allegations baseless and described Manas as “very sensible”. Shukla argued that Manas’s job at a reputed bank did not align with the portrayal of him as mentally unstable.Shukla said Manas had been caring for Sheeba since their parents died, routinely giving her medicines before leaving for work and again after returning. He said Manas loved both his wife and his sister and maintained that the primary conflict in the household was over living arrangements.According to Shukla, both Manas and Divya were earning well, but Divya did not want to live with Sheeba, while Manas wanted the three of them to continue living together in the same home. The dispute, he said, escalated amid mounting tensions.
