Zirakpur man duped of Rs 7 lakh in fake investment scam

Zirakpur: A Zirakpur resident was duped of around Rs 7 lakh by cyber fraudsters who lured him with fake investment schemes and fabricated profit claims. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The victim said he received a message on WhatsApp offering attractive investment plans linked to the stock market. The caller allegedly shared screenshots showing high returns earned by other investors within a short period after investing small amounts.“The complainant told us that the accused gained his confidence by showing fake profit statements and promised quick returns,” said a police official. The fraudster allegedly collected the victim’s Aadhaar card details, PAN number, and bank account information on the pretext of creating an online investment portfolio. He was then asked to transfer Rs 1 lakh to a given bank account.“After the initial transfer, the victim was shown online profit increasing from Rs 1 lakh to around Rs 6.5 lakh, which convinced him that the scheme was genuine,” police sources said. Encouraged by the displayed profits, the victim reportedly invested additional amounts in different plans, transferring nearly Rs 7 lakh more. The fraudulent platform showed his total profits rising to around Rs 10 lakh. However, when the victim attempted to withdraw the money, all contact numbers of the accused were found to be switched off, and he was blocked from further communication. Police officials said efforts are underway to trace the bank accounts and mobile numbers used.MSID:: 128309555 413 |
