Hyderabad: A 31-year-old woman lost Rs 3 lakh to a fraudster impersonating a doctor on a matrimonial website.Based on her complaint, the cybercrime police registered a case. Police said the woman had been contacted by a man claiming to be a doctor from Canada on a matrimonial app. He told the woman that he was planning to set up a hospital in India. He informed her over the phone that he would arrive in Hyderabad on Feb 16. On the same day, the victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Mumbai airport who said that Rajesh had been caught for illegally carrying foreign currency beyond the permissible limit.The caller threatened to arrest Rajesh and demanded money, citing various reasons. Due to a lack of money, the victim raised a loan from different sources and paid nearly Rs 3 lakh. She later realised that she had been dealing with cyber fraudsters and approached the police. In another case, a software professional lost Rs 2.8 lakh to matrimonial fraud. A man contacted her after seeing her profile. After chatting for a few days, he said his bank accounts had been blocked for technical reasons and that he needed to pay his sister’s college fees in Australia urgently.He initially asked for Rs 25,000 and later collected additional money. Once the accused had become unreachable, she approached the police.
