Prayagraj: Tragedy hit Kaushambi’s Jawaharganj village on Tuesday as a 25-year-old bride-to-be allegedly took her own life, turning wedding celebrations into mourning.Initial probe suggested that the woman was involved with a local man, who had been calling her and her fiancé, a Gonda-based constable, asking him to call off the wedding. The man had been in a relationship with the woman for six years.Kaushambi SP Rajesh Kumar told TOI, “When the fiancé came to know about their affair, he told her family members who pulled her up. Upset over this, she consumed a poisonous substance late Monday and died on Tuesday.”However, the woman’s father alleged that the groom’s family demanded more dowry and, along with an accomplice, defamed his daughter, leading to her mental distress and eventual suicideThe SP said: “The family members of the bride have lodged an FIR with Sarayakil police station under section 108 of BNS and sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Dowry Act against the groom and his family members for calling off the marriage for more dowry… Action will be initiated once the investigation is completed.”Police said the marriage date was finalised as Feb 10 in Sept last year, and both families were engaged in preparations. About a week back, the woman’s lover surfaced and started making WhatsApp calls to her would-be-groom, posing as her close relative. The caller offered to show proof of their relationship but instead started threatening the constable. The constable then reported the matter to Sarayakil police on Monday, informing them about the woman’s past with her lover.
