Bengaluru: A woman and her eight-year-old son were fatally struck by a college bus near Vivek Nagar bus stop on Srinivagilu Main Road Monday. The accident occurred between 6.45am and 6.50am as Sangeetha, 37, and her son Partha were walking to his school, which begins at 7.20am.Originally from Sangam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, Sangeetha worked as a helper at Army Public School, where Partha was a Class II student. They lived in Andhra Colony, Vivek Nagar.
Police said the bus (KA-51-AL-7920) belonging to Jain (Deemed-to-be) University’s Global Campus in Kanakapura hit the pair while they were crossing the road. Both suffered severe injuries and died on the spot.The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled, reportedly fearing an attack from angry residents who had gathered there. Police later arrested the driver, Sunil, 24. His alcohol test returned negative.A senior police officer said the college bus was ferrying lecturers at the time. “The driver was taking a right turn and failed to notice the woman and her son crossing the road.”The bodies were shifted to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital for post-mortem and later handed over to the family. Police cleared the bus to ease traffic, even as residents mourned the loss of the mother and child. Ashok Nagar traffic police have registered a case against the driver and are investigating.
