‘Wire theft’ turns fatal for man in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: An unidentified man was found dead near a power substation in Sector 44 on Saturday, with the police suspecting that he was electrocuted while attempting to steal electrical wires from the facility.“No mobile phone, identity documents, or other personal belongings were found on the body,” an officer said. A wire cutter and pliers were recovered from his pockets.

The police received a call around 9 am on Sunday which reported that a man was found unresponsive near a powerhouse close to Apparel House. The deceased is believed to be between 25 and 35 years old.Prima facie, the police believe the man entered the powerhouse to steal copper wires and died after coming into contact with a live electrical source. “The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination,” the officer added.According to the officer, the body could only be sent for an autopsy three days after the incident because the deceased’s identity remained unknown. Police said photographs of the deceased were circulated to nearby police stations and neighbouring districts to help trace his identity.An inquest was initiated under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and further investigation was under way to ascertain the exact time of the incident. The police are also probing if there was negligence at the powerhouse that may have led to the incident.Further legal action will be taken based on the autopsy report, the officer added.
