Vantangiya vogue: From forest hamlets to catwalk

Gorakhpur: Once confined to concerns forest settlements and deprived of basic identity documents such as Aadhaar and voter IDs, women from Vantangiya community walk the ramp with confidence, drawing applause across Uttar Pradesh. Their transformation from marginalised forest dwellers to poised performers reflects a larger story of social inclusion and empowerment.The change has been driven by Yogi Adityanath govt’s Mission Shakti, along with sustained efforts of Supreme Court advocate Sugam Singh Shekhawat. A postgraduate from Gorakhpur, Shekhawat has mentored these women, trained them in ramp walk and helped build their self-confidence.Since Jan 2022, Vantangiya women have showcased their talent at Gorakhpur Mahotsav, Agra Mahotsav, Ayodhya’s Sawan Jhula Mahotsav, G20 cultural events in Kashi, programmes in Mathura and Maharajganj Mahotsav.At the ongoing Gorakhpur Mahotsav, a special costume show titled ‘Shagun Ki Raat’ was staged. The show depicted traditions through a modern fashion narrative, blending Kashmiri, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Spanish, French and Hindi music. Designs by Delhi-based Laxmi Creation, professional makeup by Lakme and L’Oréal teams, and participants aged between five and 75 years make it a unique presentation. Actor-MP Ravi Kishan Shukla is expected to attend the finale.
