KANPUR: Police in Kannauj district apprehended undertrial prisoner Dumpy alias Shiva, who escaped from District Jail Kannauj on 5 January, during an encounter on Sunday in the Kotwali Gursahaiganj area.The accused sustained a bullet injury to his left leg during firing between the police and criminals and was admitted to the district hospital for treatment. He was later referred to the medical college. A heavy police force was deployed at the hospital premises, and doctors said his condition was currently stable.According to information, under the direction of Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar, police teams continuously conducted raids to arrest the escaped prisoner.

On Sunday, 18 January, an informer tipped off the police that Dumpy alias Shiva, a resident of Malgawan (Thana Thathiya), was spotted in the Kotwali Gursahaiganj area.The police cordoned off the area near Tara Bagiya on the road from Muradganj crossing towards Tirwa road. Seeing himself surrounded, the accused opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory action, a bullet fired by police hit Shiva’s left leg, after which he fell injured and was arrested.Police recovered illegal weapons and cartridges from the accused. There was a reward of Rs 25,000 on him. Police were also investigating who provided him shelter during his escape and were searching for his associate Ankit.
