Wellness travel used to mean disappearing—a remote retreat, a week off the grid, a flight to somewhere with better air.
That version still exists (and is still fabulous), but some of the most interesting wellness experiences in the U.S. right now don’t require any of that.
They’re happening in cities, hotels, lava caves, and riversides. And in most cases, a long weekend is all you need to feel revived.
Here’s where to go for that wellness boost.
Bend, Oregon
Bend doesn’t claim to be a wellness destination, which is part of why it’s so good at being one.
The high-desert wellness programming here runs deep, from Kava & Cacao Ceremonies to Yin Yoga and Sage Bundle Making on 640 acres of Central Oregon landscape.
A new Trailhead Lodge opening on the property this summer adds yet another option, with mountain bike rentals and trails right from the door.
If contrast therapy, cold plunges, and fresh air are your thing, Bend is doing it better than almost anywhere else in the country.
Scottsdale, Arizona
But it’s less about the number of spas and more about what the best properties are doing with their landscapes. The Sonoran Desert is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth, and Scottsdale’s top spas have figured out that it makes for one of the world’s most distinctive treatment menus.
More than just clever branding, these experiences are unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else.
The more time you spend in Scottsdale, the more you appreciate the desert beyond the scenery. You start to feel its healing ability.
Aspen, Colorado
The “Aspen Idea” is a holistic philosophy created by the city’s founders decades ago, built on the belief that a good life requires equal attention to mind, body, and spirit.
This philosophy shows in how the city is organized and how people still live their lives there today: world-class trails, fly fishing on the Roaring Fork River, cycling the high passes above Independence Pass, and daily yoga classes at the summit of Aspen Mountain, accessible by gondola and hosted by Aspen Shakti against a backdrop of the Rocky Mountains that makes your worries slip away.
Aspen has always had its stunning landscape, and now the wellness aspect has caught up.
Sonoma County, California
Beneath the resort town of Boyes Hot Springs (about an hour north of San Francisco, depending on traffic), geothermal mineral waters have been rising to the surface for centuries, and people figured out pretty quickly that soaking in them felt restorative.
The surrounding county fills in the rest. Farm-to-table dining from some of California’s most flourishing agricultural land, vineyard walking trails, open-space preserves, and a pace that doesn’t feel performed but rather lived.
Sonoma’s wellness story predates the wellness industry hype by a long stretch, and that history is felt in a way that’s hard to manufacture.
Miami, Florida
Layered beneath all of it is Miami’s year-round outdoor culture that includes beach yoga, open-water swimming, and morning runs along the oceanfront. This makes the whole city feel like a wellness amenity, spa booking or not.
