Unfair airfare: CM seeks UDAN for Imphal-Guwahati route to ease trip

Imphal: Affordable and reliable air connectivity has become a pressing need for Manipur, where frequent disruptions in surface transport and the absence of fully operational railway links make flights essential. Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand has urged civil aviation minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu to include the Imphal-Guwahati-Imphal route under the Regional Connectivity Scheme — Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (RCS-UDAN) — to ease travel costs for the people of the state. In his communication, Khemchand expressed appreciation for the continued support extended to the state and acknowledged the role of airlines in maintaining essential air connectivity. However, he highlighted that airfare on the Imphal-Guwahati sector remains significantly higher compared to similar routes in other northeastern states with comparable distances.“For the people of Manipur, air connectivity is not merely a convenience but an essential requirement,” he said. The CM also drew attention to proactive steps taken by the state govt to improve the aviation ecosystem.“The govt of Manipur has significantly lowered VAT on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) from 20% to 1% to enhance air connectivity and tourism,” he said.In his letter, Khemchand requested the inclusion of the Imphal-Guwahati-Imphal route under RCS-UDAN, which aims to make air travel affordable and strengthen regional connectivity across India.
