Two killed as bus crashes into stationary truck on NH-48

Vadodara: Two people were killed and more than 10 were injured when a private bus hit a stationary truck on National Highway 48 near Karjan early on Friday morning.The accident occurred near the Dhavat Chokdi bridge when the bus, going from Aurangabad to Ahmedabad, rammed into a truck parked at the side of the highway. Police said the impact was so severe that it crushed the front of the bus. Many passengers were trapped inside the bus as the exit door was completely mangled.Two passengers died on the spot, while 25 were reported to be stuck in the mangled vehicle. The deceased are Himmat Devipujak and Rafiq Sheikh. Karjan fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. The firemen cut open the bus to rescue the passengers inside.The rescue operation lasted about 90 minutes, during which the injured and the deceased were pulled out using specialized equipment and improvised arrangements. Ten injured passengers were shifted to hospitals and some of them are said to be in a serious condition.Police said an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident. “Preliminary information suggests that the bus hit the stationary truck. We are examining whether negligence, poor visibility or other factors contributed to the accident,” a police official said. The accident led to congestion on the highway for some time, which was later cleared.
