Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs on Tuesday arrested a duo for attempting to smuggle 1.5 kg of 24-karat gold dust worth Rs 2.1 crore at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.The accused have been identified as Vikram Bane (29), a staff member employed with HRPL, and Mohammad Morshedul Alam (27), a Bangladeshi national. Both were arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962.According to AIU officers, they intercepted a transit passenger based on digital profiling. The officials apprehended the passenger and the staffer after allegedly nabbing them inside a washroom near the smoking area in the departure zone, adjacent to the duty-free shop at Level-2 of Terminal-2.Upon examination, officers recovered 24-karat gold dust concealed in wax, comprising of four pieces valued at approximately Rs 2.1 crore.Official stated that Alam allegedly admitted to carrying and smuggling the gold at the behest of an unknown person, while Bane reportedly confessed to receiving the gold in exchange for Rs 10,000.
