Jaipur: Two suspects were arrested Friday night after police intercepted a Scorpio vehicle in Bassi and recovered illegal firearms and cartridges during a crackdown on suspected arms smuggling in the city.Police identified the accused as Anil Kumar alias Sukha (21), a resident of Dadanpura in Dholpur, and Lokesh Kumar alias Ayan (27), a resident of Akhaipura in Daulatpura. Both were arrested under provisions of the Arms Act.Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal said the Crime Branch received specific information that armed criminals were heading towards Bassi to supply country-made pistols and cartridges. During the search of the vehicle, police recovered two country-made pistols, 10 live cartridges, and two empty cartridges. The illegal weapons and the Scorpio vehicle were seized on the spot.Officials said the city police were on the lookout for arms smugglers for the past several days and tracked those ferrying illegal weapons from one area to another. The operation in Bassi was part of this wider surveillance drive aimed at curbing the circulation of country-made firearms in the city and its outskirts.Both accused were taken into custody and are being interrogated to ascertain the source of the weapons and their intended recipients. “Further arrests and recoveries are likely in the case as we are trying dismantle the entire network,” said an offiical.
