Two caught with bovine meat get 10 years in jail

Vadodara: A sessions court in Godhra sentenced two people caught in possession of 53kg bovine meat to 10 years’ imprisonment. The accused were caught along with the car in which they brought the meat.The accused, Mehboob Saburiya and Farhan Saburiya, both residents of Godhra, landed in the police net on July 9, 2024, when their car broke down on Hamirpur Road in Godhra. A police patrol spotted the car on the road along with a motorcycle.According to the offence registered by the police, two people were sitting in the car while two others were on the bike. When the police reached near the car, the two who were on the motorcycle escaped but the duo sitting inside was caught.The police spotted a bag on the seat of the car with two knives and as many axes inside it. On checking the boot of the car, they found a urea bag filled with meat. An offence was registered as forensic tests revealed that the meat was bovine.Mehboob and Farhan revealed that they procured the meat from Salim Bhaijamal. The police arrested Bhaijamal too, and a chargesheet was filed against all three accused.The case was heard in the court of additional sessions judge R R Patel. The court found the evidence against Mehboob and Farhan sufficient to sentence them to 10 years’ imprisonment under provisions of the amended Gujarat Animal Preservation Act.Mehboob and Farhan were also fined Rs two lakh. The court, however, acquitted Bhaijamal as the case against him was made only on the basis of the statements of the accused.
