Kanpur: Railway Protection Force personnel arrested two at Fatehpur railway station and recovered 148 turtles from them on Wednesday. RPF commander Rajinder Kumar said Umesh Kanjad, resident of Mahesuwa in Hanumanganj police station area of Sultanpur district, arrived at the station with his brother-in-law carrying sacks and bags and appeared suspicious. On being searched, 148 turtles valued at lakhs of rupees were recovered from the sacks.Kanjad said that he and his brother-in-law reached Fatehpur by bus from Sultanpur district and were waiting for a train to take them to West Bengal. According to RPF commander, turtles are smuggled on buses and trains and sold for hefty amounts.
Forest department team was informed about the seizure and case will be registered against both men arrested and they will be presented in court.RPF Commander said a week ago too, RPF in Prayagraj had caught five turtle smugglers, following which checking at Fatehpur railway station was intensified. tnn
