Kolkata: A 26-year-old trader, Sheikh Sahil, of Annapura Enclave in South Roy Nagar, Bansdroni, was allegedly assaulted and robbed of his gold chain on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in Singhabari area on Sunday night (Jan 25).Sahil alleged that he was attacked by two to three bike-borne youths around 9:30 pm while he was waiting to meet a friend near a commercial stretch close to Singhabari junction.

He submitted a written complaint at Survey Park Police Station, following which cops registered a case and started probe.Sahil alleged that the youths had assaulted him without any provocation after they asked him why was he standing at the spot. They had also asked him where was he from. Sahil said he tried to explain that he was waiting for someone, but the men allegedly began assaulting him. Sahil alleged that the attackers beat him with sticks and struck him with a heavy object, causing him to fall to the ground. He further claimed that one of the assailants displayed a knife during the attack and even ‘stabbed’ him, before fleeing away with his gold chain.In his complaint, Sahil also stated that he shouted for help but no one intervened. Investigators noted that the location was typically busy in the evening, and they were examining why passers-by did not respond and whether the assault occurred in a less visible pocket of the roadway or during a brief lull in traffic. Sahil sought medical treatment at the state-run Baghajatin Hospital in Jadavpur area, police said. He later approached Survey Park Police Station. Officers recorded his statement and are collecting medical documents as part of the investigation. Cops were also reviewing CCTV footage. Cops collected video from a traffic signal camera at Singhabari junction and from a camera installed near a mall in the vicinity. Cops are probing if the attack was linked to old rivalry, hired attackers or his friend. The motive is unclear at present, cops said.
