TN seals short-term power purchase

Chennai: To manage the spike in electricity demand during peak summer months, the TNPDCL will procure short-term power with a total contracted capacity of 4,029 MW at tariffs ranging from 5.4 to 9.5 for a unit. With power demand expected to reach 23,000 MW this year, TNPDCL augmented generation, signed long and medium-term power purchase agreements, and strengthened the distribution network. The move aims to bridge demand–supply gaps and ensure an uninterrupted power supply during the high-consumption summer season. TNPDCL officials said it would be an advantage for the State to sign power agreements in advance, as there would not be much power available in the local market during the peak of summer. TNN
