Hyderabad: Political activity is set to intensify across municipalities and municipal corporations in the state as the Congress, BRS, BJP, AIMIM, Left parties, Telangana Jagruthi, BSP, AAP, TDP and YSRCP, along with smaller parties and independents, filed nominations for elections to 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations scheduled for polling on Feb 11.No party has formally announced any pre-poll alliance so far. TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud said, “No alliance talks have been held with the MIM. The Congress is contesting in all the ULBs. Voters should not fall prey to the false campaign of the BJP. There is no alliance between the Congress and AIMIM.”
MIM candidates filed 576 nominations from wards in Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Mancherial, Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar municipal corporations, as well as in municipalities including Bhainsa, Bhongir, Vikarabad, Tandur, Zahirabad, Shadnagar and Kalwakurthy.Telangana Jagruthi leader K Kavitha fielded candidates in various ULBs, with contestants using the All India Forward Bloc election symbol. They filed nominations from wards in the Nizamabad, Ramagundam, Mancherial and Karimnagar municipal corporations, and in another 50 municipalities.TDP candidates filed nominations from 30 wards in ULBs in Khammam, Suryapet and Kodad, the bordering districts of the two Telugu states. In the previous municipal elections, the TDP contested in over 340 wards, won a few seats, and several candidates later joined other parties. A YSRCP candidate filed a nomination from a ward in Edulapuram municipality in Khammam district.Candidates from AAP filed 50 nominations, BSP 326, CPM 284, other registered parties 1,645, and independents 3,745. Sources said more than one candidate from the families of a few MLAs filed nominations.Officials said many candidates could be left out after scrutiny of nominations on Saturday or after withdrawals, with Feb 3 being the last date for withdrawal of candidature. A clear picture of the number of parties and candidates in the fray will emerge only after the final list of contesting candidates is published, after the withdrawal deadline.
