Telangana govt devises supportive action plan for SSC exams by categorising students

Hyderabad: Less than a month ahead of the SSC exams, the state govt has devised a Supportive Action Plan directing schools to categorise students based on their performance in the pre-final exams.Under the plan, which has drawn criticism from a section of academics, schools have been asked to divide students into three categories: those unlikely to pass, those securing average marks, and those showing good progress. Schools have also been instructed to devise separate strategies for each category to ensure targeted improvement.

Govt schools have additionally been told to schedule special classes in between Class 10 board exams to help students prepare.“It’s unfortunate that officials are coming up with plans without understanding the ground reality. They can’t blindly follow the CBSE or ICSE pattern without understanding the background of students studying under SSC, especially in govt schools. Calling students even during exams will leave them with little or no flexibility in preparation,” said M Ravindar, a maths teacher. He added that teachers were being left with little flexibility, as the govt was deciding how, when, and what to teach. As per the plan, teachers have been asked to explain two to three key concepts and also allocate time for self-study, writing practice, and teacher-guided support. Teachers have also been instructed to randomly check written answers and provide feedback on presentation, content organisation, and the use of appropriate terminology.“Segregating students just before the public exams will not yield any positive results. In fact, it will affect the morale of students and impact their preparation. The idea might be good, as students may get individual attention, but the timing is definitely wrong,” said Uma M, another teacher.Teachers also pointed out that ensuring attendance for such special classes during the examination period would be difficult as many would want to prepare on their own instead of following a prescribed pattern.
