Teachers question JEE, NEET coaching in govt schools

Hyderabad: Not just corporate or private institutions; even govt schools have entered into partnerships with coaching institutes to deliver content aligned with JEE and NEET preparation.Teachers said this was completely unnecessary, as it was doing more harm than good to students studying in state-run schools.

“Without understanding the ground realities, the govt has partnered with coaching institutes and are burdening students who are already struggling with basic classwork. They do not need JEE and NEET-aligned content. They can learn it at the intermediate level,” said Ch Durga Bhavani, headmistress of a govt high school. She added that children were becoming addicted to mobile phones because of these tie-ups, as they were required to spend a certain number of hours each week completing modules. “Further, many hostellers do not have access to the internet after school hours and are unable to complete their work,” she said.Teachers also said this was turning them into facilitators, as they were expected to show video lessons supplied by these institutes instead of conducting regular classes.“They are just made to watch videos. How is this helpful? This JEE/NEET-aligned coaching is seeing hardly any success,” said Chava Ravi, a govt teacher. The teachers said that if the govt was serious about competitive exam coaching, it should begin from class 6 for academically bright students, delivered by teachers, instead of collaborating with private institutes.Meanwhile, the Telangana Education Commission (TEC) said this was a policy decision taken by the govt to improve the quality of education in govt schools. “There is no fee charged. The tie-ups are only meant to improve quality,” said PL Vishweswar Rao, member, TEC.
