Tankers get calls before summer in PCMC limits

Pune: Low pressure water supply over the past few days in several parts of Pimpri Chinchwad, particularly Vishalnagar and Ravet, compelled multiple housing societies to rely on tankers before the onset of summer.Mayur Kolambkar, a resident of Elina Homes Housing Society in Ravet, said the 128-flat complex usually required tanker water after March every summer. “This year, we were forced to call tankers as early as Jan because of the low-pressure supply over the past few days,” he said.

Kolambkar said a similar problem occurred last year. Residents had recorded the water supply readings then and raised the issue with officials from the water supply department, following which the problem was resolved. The situation appears to be more acute in Vishalnagar, where residents of multiple housing societies reported low pressure and inadequate supply. Rahul Patil, a resident of Shriram Plaza Housing Society having 12 flats, said the society’s storage tanks earlier filled to the capacity. Now, they were getting only 20-30% water of their capacity, he said. “Fortunately, we have borewells to manage the demand, but this is not right. We pay taxes to the civic body on time, but do not get basic services in return,” he said. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) supplies water on alternate days across the twin cities. Vishalnagar’s Ram Krishna said the low-pressure supply issue persisted since Jan 10, particularly along the stretch from the Military Compound to the DP Road area. “Storage tanks are not getting filled to the capacity because of inadequate supply. Naturally, the stored water is insufficient to last for two days, as we receive water on alternate days,” he said.Residents of Creative Sunrise Housing Society on DP Road echoed similar concerns. “The existing water tanks in housing societies are insufficient to store water for two days because of the alternate-day supply. Now, low-pressure supply is aggravating the problem,” a resident said.A senior official from the PCMC water supply department said the problem was confined to specific areas and it would be addressed. “Such problems usually begin in February as water demand increases. We are working on bringing additional water from the Bhama Askhed dam. Once that project is complete, the water scarcity issue in Pimpri Chinchwad would be addressed to a large extent,” the official said.
