A rugby referee has been forced to abandon a derby game tonight after a mass brawl broke out between players from two British universities.

Swansea University hosted rivals Cardiff at Dunvant RFC as both sides looked to secure key points to keep them in the Bucs Super Rugby league.

Cardiff led Swansea 28-19 with just minutes left on the clock, with the away side running in four tries before the 78th minute.

However, an altercation near the touch line sparked a 30-man bust-up, with fans hurling pints of beer over players who tussled near the hoardings.

Tensions flared over a high tackle, with Cardiff players throwing their hands in the air before Welsh referee Adam Jones penalised the indiscretion.

Mr Jones blew his whistle eighteen times as players rushed to join the brawl.

After players refused to respond to the referee’s call for calm, Mr Jones said: “Okay, that’s enough, boys.

“This game is abandoned. Boys, take your players away. He needs to leave the field.”

When asked what abandoning the game would mean for both sides, Mr Jones said: “That is completely unacceptable what I have just witnessed there from them, okay?

“The game is abandoned it’s as simple as that. Job done. I’m not playing on when that has just happened, boys.”

The referee clarified a decision on whether Cardiff will carry the five points they were poised to take would be up to the league’s organisers.

More than 1,000 fans had crammed into Dunvant RFC ahead of the South Wales Derby.

“I want to go home, I want to go home, Swansea’s a s**thole, I want to go home,” was another chant made by Cardiff fans.

Cardiff University’s head coach Chris Davies addressed the scenes at the end of the game.

“It’s obviously a disappointing end of the game,” he said.

Despite the referee declaring the match had been abandoned, Cardiff's post-match reactions suggested the side would be awarded five points for their 28-19 victory at Dunvant RFC
