Surat: A renowned builder, Tushar Ghelani, attempted suicide at his home in the Parle Point area of the city in the wee hours of Sunday. He shot himself in the head with his licensed revolver and was rushed to Mahavir Hospital, where he is said to be in a critical condition. Ghelani is a has built many residential and commercial schemes under the Jolly brand name.Ghelani’s daughter’s wedding was scheduled for Feb 5. The traditional ‘kankotri lekhan’ (wedding card unveiling) was to be held at his bungalow in Sangam Society on Sunday.On Saturday night, he argued with his wife and family members over the wedding arrangements. He broke down and went to his room and then shot himself in the head with his revolver.Paramedics and Umra police soon arrived and Ghelani was taken to Mahavir Hospital, where he in the ICU.Umra inspector Jignesh Rathwa told TOI: “We are investigating the incident. The victim is in a critical condition. We are trying to know what led to him to take this extreme step.”At the time of the shooting, the house was filled with guests who had arrived for the wedding. “He shot himself in left temple an the bullet exited from his right temple. Fragments of the bullet entered parts of his brain, causing massive swelling. We are treating him and he is on ventilator support. Blood pressure and pulse support is also being administered. He is critical and a team of doctors are treating him. The next 24-48 hours will decide the direction of treatment,” one of the treating doctors said.
