Chennai: After two days of unseasonal, monsoon-like showers that had Chennaiites reaching for umbrellas, the city is set to see a return to colder nights and sunny days from Monday.
The showers will shift towards interior districts, weather observers said.Chengalpet and Kancheepuram districts recorded rainfall up to 2.5cm in certain areas till Sunday morning, and the gloomy weather continued on Sunday with sporadic showers in southern suburbs. Chennai’s maximum temperature was 26.8°C, which was 3.3°C lower than the normal temperature recorded in previous years. Overall rainfall in the city was around 1cm.On Sunday, people in southern suburbs woke up to moderate rain, while the core city remained overcast. Till 5.30pm, Guindy recorded 1cm rainfall, whereas Chengalpet and Kancheepuram received up to 2.3cm rainfall. The rain continued in Chengalpet in the evening hours. However, weather experts said rainfall will move towards interior districts on Monday. “Widespread rain was witnessed in Chennai and surrounding districts on Sunday. While some interior districts witnessed a mild spell on Sunday, south Tamil Nadu will experience sporadic rainfall from Monday onwards,” he said. While 1.2cm is the state’s average January rainfall, the showers this year have even crossed last year’s mark of 2.43cm.Meanwhile, social media was abuzz with the pleasant Chennai weather, with prayers for it to stay for a few more days. However, weather enthusiasts said that overcast skies will clear and dry weather will take over, with colder nights and brighter days.
