Student unions protest against LU’s Rs 2K late fee fine

Lucknow: Student associations have opposed new provision introduced by Lucknow University to impose fine of Rs 2,000 on student failing to submit fees on time.Earlier, penalty was Rs 200, which has been increased 10 times by LU, assuming fear of heavy fine will make students submit fees on time.

Members of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha burned copies of the order on the second campus, while on the main campus, National Students’ Union of India leader tore the notice and along with Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad representatives, submitted separate memorandums to registrar Bhavana Mishra, demanding its immediate withdrawal. Student organisations termed the decision financially burdensome. LU spokesperson Mukul Srivastava said, “Late fee is not punishment but regulatory measure to ensure timely completion of admission process. Deadlines and late fees are essential for maintaining academic schedules.”
