State BJP questions EC’s ‘soft handling’

Kolkata: Bengal BJP, unhappy with the Election Commission‘s “soft handling” of the situation in the state, has urged the poll panel to show some “action”. The party, which has asked CEC Gyanesh Kumar to visit Bengal to understand the ground reality, said the EC should take help of central armed police forces during hearings.“The Election Commission is taking a soft stance. It will not be useful in this state. They need to take action,” state leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said. Referring to “hindrances” faced during SIR and “muscle-flexing by Trinamool to intimidate officials”, he said the EC cannot take a soft stance.Adhikari also questioned the reason for the commission to refrain from deploying central forces at hearing centres. “The Constitution of India has given EC the highest authority. If they want, they can deploy central forces without consulting anyone. But the EC’s role, so far, has been restricted to letters only. People in the state want action and not speeches,” he said.Earlier, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya urged CEC Kumar to visit the state. Adhikari said Kumar cannot do anything alone. “He needs the full bench to function properly. Three of them have to take a decision. The full bench should seek intervention of the SC,” he said. With TMC and EC already in SC over SIR, Adhikari said: “We can move the Supreme Court too.”
