Berhampur: Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) on Saturday introduced a QR code to collect monthly rents from each stall and vending unit, aimed at hassle-free rent collection.Mayor Sanghamitra Dalei launched the distribution of the QR code to stall owners at a function here. “We hope this online payment mode proves beneficial to both the civic body and vendors,” she said. The vendors will pay rent online by using the unique QR code generated in his/ her name.On launch day, BeMC handed over QR codes at least 10 vendors. “We will provide individual QR code to each vendor and stall owner rented out by BeMC across the city over next week,” said BeMC assistant commissioner Ronit Kumar.BeMC has rented out 868 stalls and 236 vending units in the city, collecting around Rs 1.6 crore annually as rent. “We hope the rent collection increases after introduction of the online collection by using QR code,” he said.BeMC commissioner Prathamesh Arvind Rajeshir has directed for hassle-free online rent collection after reviewing the monthly rent collection from stalls and vending zones and developing the QR code for every vendor. The rent collection manually posed difficulties as the civic body has only two collection personnel.Most of the time, several vendors said they could not pay the rent regularly because of the absence of rent collectors. “Their complaints will be addressed when we introduce online payment facilities. This facility will also maintain transparency, while the corporation will maintain the records of the payment of every individual,” said Ronit Kumar.BeMC will shortly introduce QR code facilities to collect other taxes after gauging the success of this project, said the mayor.
