Tragic incident in Balangir district saw an eight-year-old boy lose an eye when a toy from a chip packet exploded near a stove

BALANGIR: An eight-year-old boy lost his eye after a toy included in a packet of chips exploded upon contact with fire in Balangir district’s Sagadghat village on Monday. The victim’s parents filed a complaint against the manufacturer at Titilagarh police station.According to reports, the child was alone at home when the accident occurred. The boy’s mother stated that her son was seated near a clay stove and eating chips, when he threw the toy into the flames. The toy immediately exploded, and fragments pierced the boy’s eye.Sources said the impact was so powerful that the pupil got dislocated, ruling out the possibility of saving the eye through surgery. “We rushed my son to Titilagarh Hospital, but the doctor, after examining him, said the eye was severely damaged, resulting in permanent vision loss. We are helpless. The manufacturing company should be held accountable for including such a hazardous toy inside the packet,” said Bhanumati.Police initiated a preliminary inquiry before formally registering the case for further investigation. “We are investigating whether the incident occurred due to negligence or if the toy was made of hazardous material,” said Jyotisabanta Padhani, sub-divisional police officer of Titilagarh.
