A dedicated investigation unit is delving into the unsettling case of an 18-year-old medical student found dead in Patna. Authorities are interrogating the medical personnel from the private hospital where she first sought care. The findings from the post-mortem examination raise the possibility of sexual assault, challenging the hospital’s earlier claims of innocence.
On Sunday, the SIT examined medical records and treatment details from the initial admission. The team, led by Patna Sadar ASP Abhinav Kumar and SDPO I of Secretariat, Anu Kumari, also visited Prabhat Memorial Hiramati Hospital, where the victim was treated for three days before being shifted to another private facility on Jan 10. The student’s condition had deteriorated at this hospital. The most serious allegations against the hospital concern its medical report. While the student was in critical condition, the hospital had denied any sexual assault. The subsequent post-mortem by PMCH, however, contradicted this, confirming “sexual violence cannot be ruled out” and noting genital and physical injuries. The hospital reserved the cause of death pending receipt of all treatment papers, as highlighted in the post-mortem report. The SIT questioned the treating doctors and reviewed the student’s medical history.
Some documents were also seized for further examination.ASP Abhinav Kumar told reporters, “The investigation is under way. Police are exploring every possible angle and working based on scientific evidence. As soon as concrete facts emerge, they will be made public. However, further details cannot be shared at this time to avoid jeopardising the investigation process.”Sources said the SIT was investigating several angles, including the role of the hostel management, the student’s activities, and the circumstances surrounding her treatment.
Police officials said a clear picture regarding the cause of death would only emerge once the investigation is complete. The hospital administration, which had planned a press conference on Sunday at 2pm, cancelled it following the SIT visit. A notice was put up on the main gate and it read, “The investigation into the matter is being conducted by the SIT. In view of this, it is not possible to organise a press conference. Any information regarding the matter will only be provided by the investigation team.
