Kanpur: A fire broke out in a bank in Kalyanpur area of Kanpur early Saturday morning due to a short circuit.Passers-by saw thick column of smoke and flames rising from inside the bank and informed on 112 number. The fire brigade and police reached the spot. Firefighters first broke the shutter, then broke the window to enter the bank and brought the fire under control in about two hours. Bank employees and the branch manager also reached the spot .According to branch manager of Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank, Kalyanpur, Niharika Singh Chauhan, the bank was closed at 5pm on Saturday. No guard was posted at the bank. She said that in a preliminary investigation, the cause of the fire appeared to be a short circuit, for which a report was given at the police station. The cash department remained safe, but furniture and several important bank documents were burnt to ashes. Police are investigating the matter. tnn
