Chennai: As many as 183 completed projects costing 3,511.13 crore, including sewage treatment plants and water pipelines to schools, parks, bridges and bus termini, and work for 10 new projects valued at 1,267.62 crore was launched for the city and its suburbs on Thursday. Chief minister M K Stalin inaugurated the projects under the municipal administration and water supply department. He also flagged off five vehicles worth 47 lakh for the Metrowater.In Chennai, Stalin inaugurated 22 completed Metrowater projects worth 635.31 crore. These included drinking water supply work in Valasaravakkam and Sholinganallur (Semmenchery and Neelankarai), new and upgraded sewage treatment plants in Sholinganallur, Villivakkam and Kodungaiyur, and extensive underground sewerage work across Manali, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones. Major sewer pumping lines were also realigned to prevent sewage from entering city waterbodies in Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Ambattur and Anna Nagar zones.Under Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), he opened 63 completed projects worth 86.04 crore. These included a new bridge in Anna Nagar, bus stands in Madhavaram, 12 new school buildings across zones, ward offices, an urban primary health centre in Manali, anganwadi buildings, a dog birth control centre at the CMDA truck terminal in Madhavaram, women’s gyms, parks, ponds, playgrounds, sports courts and gas crematoria across several neighbourhoods.Stalin also laid the foundation stone for eight GCC projects worth 335.62 crore, including a long-awaited flyover on the 200-Feet Road between Sardar Patel Road and Guru Nanak College junction in Velachery, sports complexes in Manali and Madhavaram, chief minister’s study centres, and park upgrades with special facilities for children with disabilities.Two major Metrowater projects worth 932 crore were announced ––upgrading capacity of the Puzhal water treatment plant from 300MLD to 310MLD at a cost of 555.8 crore, and work to ensure continuous water supply in Adyar, Pallipattu and Thiruvanmiyur at 376.12 crore.Stalin also inaugurated large-scale combined drinking water schemes and underground sewerage projects across districts, including Namakkal, Thoothukudi, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Coimbatore and Kanniyakumari, benefiting more than 11.6 lakh people.
