Jaipur: Senior European diplomats Friday discussed the impact of growing geopolitical assertiveness by major powers on international rules and norms and noted the challenges it posed to global stability during a session titled ‘Fractured World: Pathways to Peace’ at the Jaipur Literature Festival.Speakers at the session reflected on the importance of international law, national sovereignty and multilateral cooperation at a time of heightened global uncertainty.Responding to a question on US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about taking control over Greenland, a territory of Denmark, UK high commissioner Lindy Cameron said respect for sovereignty and international law must remain fundamental principles. Rejecting perceived divisions on the issue between Western nations, she said the US remains the UK’s most important security partner and is central to its defence and security cooperation. Also speaking at the session, Norwegian high commissioner May-Elin Stener referred to the UN Charter to emphasise that respect for national sovereignty was a cornerstone of the international system.
