Seat-blocking scam in Karnataka: Enforcement Directorate attaches trustees’ assets worth Rs 19.4 crore

Bengaluru: Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing alleged engineering seat-blocking scams involving individuals from reputed colleges and private persons, has attached three immovable properties — a plot and two flats — worth over Rs 19.4 crore, linked to the trustees of an educational trust.The action follows complaints filed by officials of Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), which alleged that engineering seats were being illegally blocked. Based on the complaints, cases were registered at Malleshwaram and Hanumantanagar police stations.

According to an official ED release, “During the searches, it was revealed that unaccounted cash was collected during the admission process for engineering seats, over and above the prescribed fees in engineering colleges controlled by the accused trustees. Further, it was discovered that seats in these colleges were being sold through middlemen and agents. The cash collected by the college management was not disclosed in the educational trust’s books of accounts.“The release added, “Evidence was seized pertaining to the collection of unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 20.2 crore from the sale of engineering seats in the colleges controlled by the trust.”
