The Union Budget 2026-27 gave a major boost to heritage tourism in Uttar Pradesh by including Sarnath and Hastinapur among 15 archaeological sites proposed to be developed as experiential cultural destinations.UP tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh welcomed the announcement, saying it reflects the Centre’s commitment to preserving India’s civilisational heritage, with Uttar Pradesh playing a central role in the vision of Viksit Bharat.He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman for giving prominence to the state’s cultural legacy.“The inclusion of Sarnath and Hastinapur reinforces Uttar Pradesh’s position as a leading cultural and spiritual destination in the country,” Singh said, adding that the initiative would enhance visitor experience while safeguarding the historical sanctity of these sites.Sarnath, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, will see improved visitor facilities, curated walkways, interpretation centres, and technology-enabled storytelling.Hastinapur, the capital of the Kuru dynasty during the Mahabharata era, will be developed as a comprehensive heritage destination with scientific conservation, upgraded amenities, and structured interpretation.Venerable Bhante Sumitha Nanda Thero, Head Monk at the Maha Bodhi Society of India, Sarnath Centre, welcomed the Budget’s focus. “Sensitive development that preserves its sanctity while enhancing understanding will help pilgrims, scholars, and visitors connect more deeply with the message of peace and compassion,” he said.Private tour operator Prateek Hira described the allocations as a mixed bag. “While infrastructure development is positive, the publicity budget is low, almost equal to a private company’s spend, which could hamper foreign tourist inflow,” he said.Singh highlighted that enhanced rail connectivity through cultural regions, along with policy support, would promote seamless travel circuits, boost tourist movement, generate local employment, and consolidate Uttar Pradesh’s position as India’s leading destination for cultural and heritage tourism.
