Prayagraj: Despite ongoing efforts, road accident fatalities in Prayagraj continue to rise, prompting authorities to introduce targeted safety measures at high-risk locations.A survey conducted by Delhi-based Save Life Foundation, in collaboration with the provincial PWD division, identified 72 critical junctions in the city prone to accidents. A detailed project report (DPR) for these locations was prepared and submitted to the Lucknow headquarters for budget approval. The survey initially focused on accident-prone areas across the northern city, Meja, Karchhana and Koraon assembly constituencies to understand the underlying causes of frequent crashes. The foundation submitted its findings to PK Rai, secretary of the district road safety committee and the chief engineer of the PWD. Following this, a second survey of the identified 72 spots was conducted last month to confirm their classification as critical junctions. Under the proposed plan, special safety measures will be implemented at night, including rumble strips, table-top crossings, speed breakers, thermoplastic markings, and solar-powered “I-Cat” reflectors. Key areas covered in the project include Darbhanga Colony, State Highways 95, 9, and 102, Baluaghat Road, Chibbiya Road, Sarojini Naidu Road, and Kamla Nehru Road. The PWD proposed a budget of Rs 1.36 crore to implement these safety interventions, which is now under consideration by the Lucknow headquarters. Officials hope that the measures will significantly reduce accidents and improve road safety in the city’s most vulnerable areas.
