Rs495-cr drain nears completion in Gkp

Gorakhpur: Waterlogging woes in nearly half of Gorakhpur are set to ease before the upcoming monsoon with the near-completion of the Goddhaiya drain rejuvenation project. The Rs 495-crore project, a key priority of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has achieved 82% physical progress and is targeted for completion by June 2026, district magistrate Deepak Meena said. Once completed, the project will bring major relief to around 15 wards located in the city’s northern fringe, benefiting an estimated population of 3.5 lakh. The Goddhaiya drain which had suffered decades of neglect and encroachment and was on the verge of disappearing is being transformed through a comprehensive plan involving construction of a concrete drain, diversion works, interception and sewage treatment. The project includes construction of a 9.25-km-long drain, a 38 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP), 17.94 km of intercepting sewerlines, 18 bridges and culverts, interception of 130 drains and installation of 15 main pumping stations with a combined capacity of 61 MLD.According to officials of Jal Nigam (urban), 8.35 km of the drain has already been constructed, 7.1 km of sewerlines laid, and the STP is over 83% complete. Eleven culverts have been completed, while work on the remaining is progressing rapidly.Sewage generated from several localities, including Shahpur, Basharatpur, Rapti Nagar and Lohia Nagar, will be treated at the STP before being discharged into Ramgarh Tal, helping reduce pollution and prevent waterlogging across the catchment areas.TNN
