Rhasidat Adeleke made an impressive return to racing by breaking her Irish indoor 300m record at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas today, clocking 36.30 seconds to finish second to Stacey Ann Williams of Jamaica (35.92), with Alexis Holmes of the US third in 36.46.
Adeleke’s time broke the previous Irish record of 36.42 that she ran at the Millrose Games in New York two years ago. It was the 23-year-old Dubliner’s first competitive outing since July last year, when she clocked 22.52 for 200m at the London Diamond League.
She later withdrew from the nationals and the World Championships in Tokyo due to injury, but recently said those issues are now behind her.
Elsewhere, Cork sprinter Lucy-May Sleeman clocked an impressive 7.28 for 60m on Friday night at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina, a season’s best. The time is also under the Athletics Ireland World Indoor Championship ‘B’ standard.
Sleeman returned to the track tonight and raced in the 200m, lowering her PB to 23.68, moving ninth on the Irish indoor all-time list.
Earlier today at the Perth Track Classic in Australia, Laura Nicholson (Bandon AC) was fourth over 1500m, just outside her personal best, in 4:07.52.
