Guwahati: Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that a record allocation of Rs 11,486 crore for the northeastern states in the Union Budget 2026-27, marking a five-fold increase compared to 2014. He said projects worth Rs 72,468 crore are already underway in the region.
“A new dimension for the northeast is unfolding, and the progress of the projects has been good,” Vaishnaw said. NFR general manager Shrivastava said the high-speed corridor declared up to Siliguri in the budget proposals will be extended to Guwahati, further strengthening the Act East Policy. He said the govt is prioritising strategic links, including a project connecting Bhutan and new railway lines to enhance intra-regional connectivity. Mizoram has already been brought onto the railway map, work in Manipur has resumed, and construction toward Kohima in Nagaland is progressing. Proposals for Arunachal Pradesh are also in advanced stages.
