Jaipur: Rajasthan’s tableau at the 77th Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path in New Delhi will highlight the famed Usta art of Bikaner, bringing one of the rich traditions of the state to the national stage.Rajneesh Harsh, secretary of the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi, said the tableau is being prepared under the guidance of deputy chief minister and minister of tourism Diya Kumari, along with senior officials.Designed by artist Harshiv Sharma, it will feature live demonstrations of Usta art by artisans, along with displays of their creations. The tableau will also include camels, the ships of the desert, accompanied by traditional Rajasthani music and dance. Currently being assembled at the Rashtriya Rangshala Complex in Delhi cantonment, the tableau will later be showcased at Bharat Parv at the Red Fort from Jan 26 to 31.Usta art, which originated in the 16th century in Bikaner, is renowned for its use of pure gold leaf and embossed designs. Traditionally crafted on camel hide, wood, and stone, it reflects a fusion of Persian, Mughal, and Rajputana styles. The word ‘Usta’ itself means master, denoting the skill of its practitioners.Today, Usta art adorns wall panels, lampshades, mirror frames, furniture, and decorative boxes, making it popular for home décor and gifting. In 2023, it received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, boosting recognition and ensuring fair prices for artisans while expanding its reach to global markets. This year’s parade will feature 30 tableaux, including 17 from states and Union Territories, under the themes “Mantra of Freedom – Vande Mataram” and “Mantra of Prosperity – Atmanirbhar Bharat”. The occasion is especially significant as 2026 marks the 150th anniversary of India’s national song, Vande Mataram.
