On Friday night, a dispute occurred between a sanitation worker employed by the municipal council and a police officer near the police station in the town over the issue of lighting a bonfire. During this altercation, the officer kicked the sanitation worker. When no action was taken against the officer, the sanitation workers staged a boycott on Saturday, vocally protesting against the police and even placed the body of a dead dog outside the police station gate.
It was clearly stated that the protest would continue until action was taken against the officer. Last Friday, while filing a complaint at the police station, Sunita, the wife of Shivkumar from the town, reported that her son Tushar is a sanitation worker. His duty was assigned by the municipal council to light bonfires in public places to protect against the cold.
On Friday evening, around seven, he was lighting a bonfire at the police station in the town. In response, the present SSI Devendra Bhadauria asked, “Are you going to light a bonfire on the road?” To this, Tushar replied that bonfires are lit there every day.
