Punjab guv says jobs will curb drug use

Amritsar: Emphasising the need for better job prospects, Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday said that creating better employment opportunities was crucial to effectively curb drug abuse in the state.He was addressing a meeting with members of village defence committees at Seron village. Punjab minister Laljit Singh Bhullar was also present on the occasion.

An official said the governor stated that a neighbouring country was conspiring to disturb the state’s atmosphere through the smuggling of drugs and weapons, adding that such attempts are being met with a befitting response.Emphasising that the menace of drug abuse cannot be eradicated through govt efforts alone, Kataria said that collective participation from all sections of society—including parents, teachers, youth, common citizens, and the administration—is essential. He noted that public awareness against drugs is steadily increasing in Punjab and is beginning to take the shape of a mass movement.The Governor pointed out that unemployment and idleness are among the root causes of drug addiction. He said that by engaging youth in gainful employment and constructive activities, they can be steered away from this social evil.He underlined the importance of Village Defence Committees in the anti-drug campaign and urged them to remain vigilant and actively monitor their villages.
