Punjab Agricultural University hosts global dialogue on farming innovation.

Ludhiana: The GS Khush Institute of Genetics, Plant Breeding and Biotechnology at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) hosted a one-day international workshop titled “Scaling Sustainable Agriculture through Digital Innovation.” Baljit Singh Gill, V-P of research at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, inaugurated the programme.PAU V-C Satbir Singh Gosal detailed the university’s transformative journey in turning India into a food-surplus nation. The technical sessions featured specialised presentations on the practical application of these innovations. Steve Shirtliffe of the University of Saskatchewan discussed the role of remote sensing and data analytics in resource-use efficiency, while PAU’s SK Sandhu outlined the university’s strategic initiatives in digital phenotyping and data management. Additionally, Alix Hayden shared institutional models for accelerating tech incubation. The workshop concluded with a focus on biotechnological interventions, featuring insights from McGill University’s Jaswinder Singh on precision breeding and Kansas State University’s Kulvinder Singh Gill on using informatics for genomic crop improvement. Collectively, the experts underscored that the future of global food security rests on the seamless integration of digital tools and international scientific collaboration.
