Bengaluru: A member of Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has written to the govt to provide accident and life insurance for students in govt schools and PU colleges in the wake of rising accidents in educational institutions.Last week, Kerala govt announced an accident and life insurance scheme for all students in the state budget.Thippeswamy KT, member of KSCPCR, said insurance should cover accidents on campuses, during midday meals, in labs, playgrounds, school trips, sports events and in school buses. “Several incidents — injuries due to falls into hot food containers, accidents during school trips and sports events, electrical faults, infrastructure failures —have occurred in many schools and pre-university colleges in Karnataka in the last few years. Some of these cases resulted in the death of children. It is the fundamental duty of any democratic govt to protect the life, security and dignity of children,” Thippeswamy said in the letter. The commission said it is not enough to have life insurance as it provides compensation only in the event of death. Instead, both accident and life insurances should be given so that children are covered even for injuries.
